ABOUT SYMPOSIUM

The National Sports Institute of Malaysia, in collaboration with the Sports Medicine Unit, Faculty of Medicine, University Malaya, is proud to announce the inaugural 1st Asian Sports Cardiology Symposium scheduled to take place on the 30th of April 2024. This symposium marks a significant milestone in the field of sports medicine, particularly in the realm of cardiovascular health among athletes and active individuals.

With a primary focus on preventing sudden cardiac death among athletes, this symposium holds paramount importance in our collective efforts to safeguard the well-being of those engaged in sporting activities. Recognizing the critical need for specialized knowledge and expertise in sports cardiology, the symposium aims to bolster clinical skills in this specialized area of medicine, particularly among physicians in Malaysia and the neighboring regions who are entrusted with the care of athletes.

Through insightful discussions, interactive workshops, and knowledge exchange sessions, the symposium endeavors to equip healthcare professionals with the latest advancements, best practices, and evidence-based strategies in sports cardiology. We invite all stakeholders passionate about athlete well-being to join us in this transformative journey towards excellence in sports cardiology care.

OBJECTIVES

  • Identify ECG as a tool of screening in terms of preventing SCD among athletes
  • Updates regarding ECG interpretations and management in athletes and active sportsperson.
  • Differentiate between normal and abnormal echocardiographic findings in athletes.
  • Overview of cardiopulmonary exercise testing in the management of athletes with cardiac related issues.
  • Case-based discussion of cases managed overseas and in Malaysia.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Identify the difference between normal and abnormal ECGs in athletes and normal population
  • Stress ECG and stress echocardiographic interpretation
  • Discussion of cases related to cardiac issues in elite athletes
  • Management of cardiac pathologies in the athlete
  • Competition eligibility and return to play for athletes with cardiac disease
